In May, I went to Singapore. I found the ACM across the banks of the Singapore River, and what a gem it is. It has seperate sections divided into Singaporean, East Asian, SE Asian, South Asian and West Asian history. I particularly enjoyed the South Asian displays - the best articulation of Indian and Sth Asian ancient works and cultural expression I have found so far, and the only modern museum where I have seen Asian and Sth Asian art presented through its own eyes.
I do look forward to the day when South Asian museums in their own lands reach international standards.
When I was in the UK several years ago, I remember seeing the emergence of cutting edge artistic expression from first, second and third generation South Asian artists in the UK. There was a huge red thing in the foyer of the Tate Modern by Kapoor. Pity I did not get a chance to explore - a must for next time!
