I really liked Berlin. So crisp and clean - coming out of the shadows of Communism and into an era of economic development and social development.

This is a picture of a traffic signal button to let you change the light colour to cross the road. Later I'll post the Berlin traffic signal light box, which is also interesting.

ACM

ACM

In May, I went to Singapore. I found the ACM across the banks of the Singapore River, and what a gem it is. It has seperate sections divided into Singaporean, East Asian, SE Asian, South Asian and West Asian history. I particularly enjoyed the South Asian displays - the best articulation of Indian and Sth Asian ancient works and cultural expression I have found so far, and the only modern museum where I have seen Asian and Sth Asian art presented through its own eyes.

I do look forward to the day when South Asian museums in their own lands reach international standards.

When I was in the UK several years ago, I remember seeing the emergence of cutting edge artistic expression from first, second and third generation South Asian artists in the UK. There was a huge red thing in the foyer of the Tate Modern by Kapoor. Pity I did not get a chance to explore - a must for next time!

Was reading around (way too much time to waste) and I found some really interesting stuff - there actually is a Chinese community in Calcutta, it's the biggest in India, and there are something like 30 000 community members. I did some google image searching and came up with this - a little chinese girl, celebrating Chinese NY, in Calcutta.

I thought it was pretty interesting.

From the lonely planet -
"Melbourne is said to be the fox capital of the Western world. It's estimated that there are six foxes per square kilometre in the metropolitan area. The little scavengers tend to steal shoes, which they discard in piles - a phenomenon researchers have dubbed the 'Imelda Syndrome'".

The process... in er, process
So, tonight, instead of my 'dinner from Brumby's (bakery chain - http://www.brumbys.com.au/) I am actually *cooking*. Must be some sort of bug I caught after cooking at Tina and Raj's on the weekend :)

My plan:
Rice - 1/4 cup Jasmine rice, 1/4 cup Sushi rice; washed for a bit then put in the rice cooker with a drizzle of soy sauce
Veges - went and bought a random pack of frozen veggies and plan to use Extra Virgin olive oil, Kikkoman and Ketchup Manis to good effect :)

So yes. Work is going OK, a bit busier today than expected for a wednesday due to having crisis presentations in triage (they call the team registrar not the duty doctor which is stupid, since I am often in clinics, and the inpatient reg seeing her list of patients), but meh...

So... I am putting together my trip to China and Japan. I think I will be able to pay off my ticket soon, so that will get bought, then I plan to do the following:
- find ticket from HK to Shanghai
- find ticket from Shanghai to Beijing
- find ticket from Beijing to HK
- consider paying for the above.
- buy Japan Rail Pass
- hope fervently that auntie and uncle will be in Tokyo so I can live in their way spanky pad (near Shibuya, Ginza, Roppongi) - :)
- pay for accom in HK and China

Don't know how much of that is doable before the trip though. I did buy a pretty good travel guide to China, a Dorling Kindersley (www.dk.com) and Rajan told me he got the Japan one (curse whoever has my maps and stuff and hasn't told me, if that's the case) and some language guides. I don't like lonleyplanet ones as much (the books) because they're all text (essentially). The DK ones have great pictures and schemas of main tourist sites so you can get around places just with the book. LP do make very good city maps though and I need to get ones for HK/Tokyo/Shanghai/Beijing.

Off to shower now!

I'm trying to figure out where I want to put my blog. I tried multiply (http://ashish100.multiply.com/) but I don't like that I can't just upload flickr (www.flickr.com) pics as I want, one by one. So I think for now, I'll blog here and see how it goes.

For ease, I'm just gonna copy today's blog from multiply...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so yesterday i was looking at mel's blog and thought i wouldn't mind a blog of my own... i basically plan to upload pictures and make this a picture based blog of my doings, thoughts and ideas...

the weekend has been reasonable. i've had to duck out for bits as the real estate agent has been showing people around my apartment. i hope it get sold soon, so i can stop paying rent and move my stuff to melbourne!

i'll be working at st vincent's so i plan to rent an apartment nearby, within walking or tram/train distance.

what else did I do? today I met up with nazreen for lunch; yesterday I met rajan in the city and we checked out cameras for a trip we're making soon to china and japan, mainly looking at SLRs (Canon EOS 350D and the Olympus E-300) but also the Canon Powershot S2 IS. I think at this stage the Canon S2 would be right for me, to learn the basics of using a camera and settings... and then at some point I will get a SLR.

I kinda like taking pictures and trying to get across a feeling or idea that you have, and I equally enjoy interpreting other people's work. Flickr (www.flickr.com) is great for that.

Oh I also got a travel guide to China yesterday, and still have no idea who I gave my Japan stuff to.

Oh and I saw Salaam Namaste yesterday at Hoyts. It was shot in Melbourne, and I kinda liked the way they showed off my city. I generally watch a bollywood movie a year, or maybe 2...

Now I'll see what pics I can post up here

I guess I forgot to add that on friday night I went to the new hindu temple in perth... I don't normally go to hindu temples, but I went with tina+raj to see how it is.... I found it much more agreeable than the old pizza-hut style temple and I've added a few pics of the statues and carvings over at flickr...

cheers for now, ash
